........artists reception and butterflys

Me and Peace Seeds at Sierra Art Trails artist reception....

For the life of me I can not remember what it was we were laughing at....

Art receptions are always kind of outer body for me....

I get nervous, butterflies in my tummy....

It's all very high school....

the, 'do I belong' thing.....

and then of course it's the do they like my Spirit Figures?
Parties and group things tend to leave me feeling a bit off center.... most of my life I've felt like I'm the odd one and everyone else fits in.... gatherings always bring up old feelings.... but I am coming to realize that almost everyone feels the same way... they don't necessarily know any more about fitting in than I do...
I think this may be especially true of artists...
we prefer to speak through our art.

All that said...the reception was a lot of fun...
good food, good music, good people and great art!

The show runs through next Sunday, art trails weekend.
It's an opportunity for people to see one representative piece from each of the 90 or so artist participating in trails....Visiting the gallery is a good way to map out the artist
studios they would most enjoy visiting.

I'm hoping to see some of you at mine.
Ellen Carnese
Kathleen Mattox

and

Valerie Runningwolf

will be showing with me.

Love this post.

Being an artist is a solitary thing. I wonder if most of us feel like the "odd man out." It takes a lot of life and experience to understand that while we may be alone in the day to day, our struggles seem to be universal.

What a wonderful gathering you attended!

Blessings.

Sweet Julie I would bet that everyone feels that way at first.

Your work is wonderful.

I feel the same way about receptions, and gatherings always a stress for the artist. Besides hoping they like our art, we worry about fitting in. But do we really want our art to fit in and what is fitting in????? Our art speaks for us and so do we. It is so much easier to brag about our fellow artists. Have a great art trails!

Your art dolls are amazing and unique, they show who you are as an artist and a person! But I absolutely know how you feel, I am the same in the gathering business, not too comfortable. I bet most of the people at gatherings feel the same way, it is probably a basic human emotion. Have a great time with your art show!

Julie, I so know what you mean about "do I belong" - however it looks like this was a great show and you had a wonderful time!

Ananji,
Yes the human struggle to find our tribe is universal. That fit with people who hold us up and encourage us in achieving our vision. In the fast paced world we live in we don't always take the time to make those important connections...I think that's one of the reasons blogging is so over the top popular. It helps us find each other....
Renee,
I'm glad you like my Spirit Figures...I don't dread receptions and shows as much as I used to...The first art reception I was part of was about 7 years ago and I just kept walking around and around, trying to look busy while avoiding any and every opportunity to talk about my art...silliness...
Vivian,
Because of my chosen medium I always have a bit of anxiety over rather or not I will be accepted into the fold of 'fine art' but with each show it gets a little better...thank you for stopping by.
Cindy, thank you for coming by and leaving such kind words about my figures...they are a part of my heart...I guess the majority of people walking into a room for business, or pleasure, have that moment of 'will they like me?', 'do I have anything to contribute'...what is starting to make it all feel more comfortable is stepping out of myself and making the effort to make someone else feel part of....
Sue, it was a fun reception and I know the weekend will be fun, I'm going to have great company. Just need to throw in some sales for all four of us, some sunshine, and all will be good...thanks for coming by...

Julie, that show looks like it was a great one. Peace Seeds is divine. I feel anxious before shows also. One of these days I think we should sculpt talking sculptures of ourselves and just have them show up at receptions for us. Hmmm. I just might get working on that.

Julie, I identified with your comments. Once I can get over myself and join in with the flow, I feel better. I love gathering with other artists. We all need to detach from our easels or what ever it is we work on from time to time. It inspires me and I go back to my easel feeling nourished. Have a fabulous weekend.
